Many of us want to help our kids to feel better and even fix their problems…which actually doesn’t help. This class will help you recognize barriers to connecting positively and apply strategies that will improve your communication during this confusing developmental stage.

Child and adolescent therapists tend to differ widely in their approaches to including parents in treatment. However it can make a difference when you understand your child’s goals in therapy, adjust parenting approaches based on consideration of your child’s challenges and recognize when your child is or isn’t making progress. Sometimes as parents we need to consider whether we have mental health challenges that may be affecting our child. Parent involvement in therapy varies based on age, strategies being used by the therapist and parent capacities. This conversation will highlight some best practices for parents who have children in therapy and answer any and all questions you may have about your child’s therapy experience.

Drugs & Alcohol: Let’s Talk

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Talking with your kids about drugs and alcohol can be scary. Ideally, it’s an ongoing conversation rather than one big “talk.” The good news is you can prepare yourself by planning ahead to focus on the benefits of knowledge and not on the negative consequences of behavior. It will also help to avoid assumptions, talk about expectations, assume good intentions, share resources, and commit to remain approachable no matter what. Hopefully, this can be a learning process for you and your child.
