Challenges & Solutions

While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. This class will help you define the problem and apply strategies to work with your child and the school in ways that encourage compassion and confidence.

School refusal, also known as school avoidance, is a misunderstood and complex challenge. While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. In some cases, students have trouble leaving their homes at all. Children with school refusal behaviors often may complain of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches before school, or repeatedly ask to visit the school nurse.

Getting through daily tasks – during the work week and on weekends – can sometimes feel challenging.  Young children are not always ready to cooperate.  Developing positive routines that support learning can be enjoyable for you and your child.  Cooperation may happen more often when the emotional climate is positive and routines are consistent.

Maybe you want to be more patient. Maybe you want to stop yelling, threatening and/or punishing. You wonder how to get cooperation without those old standby methods. Our experts have the answers you need.

Mountains of research has shown that children are built to seek connection with their caregivers. They want your attention and actually need it to thrive. So you’ll get more of whatever behaviors you give attention to. However most parents give a lot more attention to challenging behaviors than to the behavior that they want. So they are actually rewarding the behavior they don’t want even with negative attention. It’s how kids’ brains work.

Most importantly, building strong positive connections with your children is the foundation of not only cooperation but overall wellbeing today and in the future. So threatening and punishing may scare your kids into following directions but that can harm your relationship and their self-worth. You’ve also probably noticed that those approaches don’t lead to long-term behavior change.

Is your family the source of your stress or the solution to it?

The answer is likely both. If your family includes several generations of caregivers or if you find yourself part of the “sandwich generation,” taking care of both your children and your own parents, you can still work toward a peaceful home. Join us to better balance the needs and values of intergenerational families for calm and cooperation at home.
