Pleasure vs. Happiness for Parents: Reclaiming Joy in a Dopamine Driven World

January 13, 2026 12:00 pm EDT/EST
Take This Workshop

Experts

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

Our lives — and our children’s — are filled with constant stimulation. Every ping, like, reward, processed food snack and sugary treat gives a quick hit of dopamine, the brain’s chemical of pleasure and reward. But when busy family life runs on constant dopamine bursts — from screens to snacks to scrolling — true happiness begins to fade.

In this one-hour, interactive digital workshop, we’ll explore Dr. Robert Lustig’s groundbreaking insight into the difference between pleasure and happiness — and how understanding this simple but profound contrast can reshape the emotional climate of your home.

You’ll discover how everyday family interactions — morning routines, after-school check-ins, dinner conversations, even weekend activities — either fuel dopamine (short-term pleasure) or serotonin (long-term happiness). You’ll learn how marketing, media, and social platforms are expertly designed to keep families stuck in the dopamine loop — and how this cycle impacts focus, cooperation, empathy, motivation, and mental health.

Together, we’ll unpack the addictive nature of dopamine-driven habits, the subtle ways they hijack our choices, and the steps parents can take to rebalance family life toward serotonin-based connection, meaning, and calm joy.

This workshop is for parents of kids of all ages who want to feel more grounded, raise emotionally strong children, and bring back true happiness to family life.

Join us for an hour with Peace At Home founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW and inspiring teacher Aaron Weintraub, MS, that may change how you think about everything from snacks to screens — and help you build a home where calm, connection, and joy take center stage.

Challenges & Solutions

As parents, we’re surrounded by advice—from doctors, teachers, therapists, and online experts. But sometimes, all that input can leave us more uncertain than ever. How do you know when to follow professional advice—and when to balance that with listening to your own instincts?

Join us for a warm and practical Lunch & Learn conversation that will help you feel more confident in your parenting choices. Together, we’ll explore:

  • How to recognize when your “gut feeling” is worth following.
  • When professional advice may not be the right fit for your child.
  • Real-life examples from children’s and teens’ mental health and neurodiversity challenges.
  • Simple strategies to balance expert input with what you know about your child.

You’ll leave with tools to sort through conflicting recommendations, ask the right questions, and advocate with confidence. Bring your lunch, tune in, and join a supportive discussion that puts parents back in the driver’s seat.

The teenage years can be exciting times of growth, but can be a strain on your relationship. As your child enters the tween and teen years their brain changes in ways that cause them to find their tribe of peers. This may mean that they are less likely to seek the advice and validation of adults but it doesn’t mean they don’t need your calm, consistent guidance.

Many parents struggle to know how much screen time to allow their kids to have, how old their kids should be when they begin using social media, and how to navigate conflict surrounding phone and video game use.

Additionally, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory Report indicates that nearly all teens use social media and we cannot conclude it is safe for their mental health. In the context of our ongoing national pediatric mental health crisis, we must come together to address these important issues. This library of quick videos provides answers to your questions about screen time and social media use at various ages of your child’s development.
