Mental health literacy is the ability to prevent, recognize and cope with mental health conditions. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health disorders were the most common diseases of childhood. Some are even declaring a pediatric mental health emergency. Whether your child is doing fine and you want to prevent future mental health issues, your child just doesn’t seem like their usual self, or your child has actually declared suicidal thoughts, you can help.

“The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind.”  – Bessel van de Kolk

In an era of heightened mental health challenges among children and adolescents, this library serves as a powerful resource for parents seeking to nurture their child’s overall well-being. Grounded in the profound impact of the parent-child relationship, this collection empowers you with the knowledge and strategies to foster a positive, mentally-healthy environment in your family. Gain insights into recognizing early signs of distress, understanding the interplay between your mental health and your child’s, and implementing proactive approaches to promote emotional resilience.

This library addresses ways to support your child with ADHD or Autism with low support needs. Many parents of children with special needs report higher than average levels of stress and conflict. Often symptoms can look like misbehavior, and children with special needs may not respond to the discipline techniques that work for other children. Diagnoses like Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD require behavioral support strategies that are specific to each child’s needs. Effective discipline is built on empathy and a balance between flexibility and consistency. It’s time to stop just surviving, and gain the tools you need to thrive and enjoy your relationship with your child, as you support their growth and development.

Are you concerned about your child or teen’s mental health? Wondering how you can really help? Do you question how well mental health providers respect culture and ethnicity? Some are declaring a “pediatric mental health emergency” because so many parents are showing up in hospital emergency rooms with fears about kids’ emotional issues. Many parents are not sure where to turn and wonder what is best for their struggling children and teens during these challenging times. Listen to our panel of Peace At Home clinicians answer questions about mental health and help you think about how to integrate your culture and ethnicity into the treatment process.

Raise Happy Children: Parenting for Optimism and Resilience

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Parents sometimes feel discouraged when their children want more toys, the newest technology, or the coolest sneakers that they believe will make them really happy. And maybe those things will work…for a few hours or a couple of days. What really makes our kids happy? How often do we get caught up in what media tells us will bring joy into our lives?

Research tells us that “things” don’t really make us happy. While temperament is inborn, parents can actually help children increase optimism (positive outlook and hopefulness) and resilience (ability to effectively bounce back from challenges). These capacities are strongly connected to well-being and success. You will examine your day to day interactions and consider approaches that will increase these important traits in yourself and your children. You will also gain the courage to set limits on “stuff” and focus on what counts in building a happy family.

The way we praise children affects how they see themselves. The language we use can actually help or hinder their desire to learn and their level of effort, as well as their ability to stick with a challenging task. You might be surprised to learn that telling your child how smart they are can actually decrease effort. Research tells us that we can help even discouraged children cope with frustration and see failure as an opportunity to learn rather than giving up. Use specific, powerful feedback to encourage your child to take appropriate risks and feel more confident to try new things.

Talking to Kids about Gun Violence

Previously hosted FaceBook Live panel discussion.  Read our summary of this discussion below then click on the lesson to access the video and information about our Experts.

Talking to Kids about Gun Violence explores ways you can help your kids deal with violent events like war and school shootings. Our most important suggestion is to manage what kids are seeing and hearing (online, tv, social media, YouTube videos, TikTok, video games, radio, etc). Even when kids seem engrossed in activities, they are picking up on what is going on around them. Each time young children see an image of a violent act, they believe it is happening at that moment, even if it is the same image shown over and and over again. Watch or just listen to this important previously-recorded discussion.

Having strategies to maintain calm and help our children feel safe in an unpredictable world can help. Please review the handout below for important tips and tools to give you clarity and confidence.
