  • Does the idea of talking with your child about sexual orientation feel difficult or even a little scary?
  • Are you confused about the changing ways that many in our society see these issues?
  • Feeling the need for some guidance about how to support your child?

The issues of sexual orientation can be daunting for both kids and parents. Your child will look to you for guidance about how to feel and act. This class will help you prepare for an open, ongoing dialogue with your child or teen that is candid, authentic, and supportive.

Challenges & Solutions

Our Solution Series Libraries are developed around a specific parenting challenge. Each Series includes a collection of hand-picked, easily digestible (15 min+/-) videos which unlock a key piece of the parenting puzzle. Read our summary of this Series below then click on each lesson to access the class description, video, handouts, and information about our Expert(s).

When your child approaches you to share or process their thoughts and feelings about gender identity or sexual orientation they are trusting you with their deepest sense self. These conversations can spark fears for their wellbeing and it can be a struggle in that moment to know how to respond without rejecting or discounting their experience. Classes in this library will help you prepare for an open, ongoing dialogue with your child or teen that is candid, authentic and supportive.

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted FaceBook Live panel discussion.  Read our summary of this discussion below then click on the lesson to access the video and information about our Experts.

If you are the parent of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) child, you probably have a lot of questions. Your support is key to your child’s well-being, but you may have to go through your own process to get there. Start with, “I’m here for you and love you,” even if you don’t understand and aren’t ok at the moment. Plan to get your own support so that you can process your deepest emotions and concerns, while helping your child to deal with their own. Peace At Home guest experts Barbara Esgalhado, PhD and Poshi Walker, MSW discuss with founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW to gain some ideas about helping your child thrive, while exploring your own path to understanding and genuine acceptance.
