Generation Bonds: Nurturing Thriving Relationships Between Grandparents, Adult Children, and Grandkids

Challenges & Solutions

Relationships with grandchildren are among the most cherished that adults experience. And yet, that relationship comes with rules and challenges. Almost half of parents report having conflicts with their children’s grandparents about discipline, food, screen time and bedtime among other issues. Some parents feel frustrated but don’t want to rock the boat or hurt their parents’ feelings.

Grandparents may hate being told what to do by their own kids or truly believe they know better. Some grandparents are accustomed to offering unsolicited advice which they may have done throughout their child’s lives, even though it isn’t really helpful. And finally some grandparents just hate stepping down from the position of being the wise one.

In some cases, parents are intentionally doing things differently from their parents. Neuroscience has taught us a lot more about child development and the impact of the parent-child relationship but grandparents are not always open to learning about these ideas. As we age, change can be hard, especially about deeply held cultural beliefs and values.

Listen to this conversation between two seasoned Peace At Home teachers: one is a grandparent and the other is a parent who deals daily with her children’s grandparents. Let’s untangle this age old challenge together on behalf of the kids!

Yes, it’s prom season with graduation right around the corner. But really, the chances are you worry about your teen engaging in risky behavior throughout the year. Studies show that youth who feel they can talk with their parents are 42% less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as promiscuity, using substances and aggression toward others. However, it’s easy to have breakdowns when talking with teens, especially about their struggles.

Peace At Home founder, Ruth E. Freeman, LCSW and seasoned adolescent clinician and founder of UAreHeard, Marc Lehman, LMFT discovers how to communicate with your tween or teen by applying strategies that work.

Talking to my Child About their Diagnosis of Autism

A diagnosis of a mental health issue or disability can come as a relief when it validates or expands your understanding of your child. It gives your family a place to start creating a support plan. You may also wonder about how much to say and how to say it to your child in a way that doesn’t harm their self-worth. In addition, when others in your family or community display symptoms of these challenges, children will often make up explanations that are not accurate.

In all these cases, children will benefit from straightforward information delivered with a compassionate point of view. A little bit of preparation can go a long way in helping your child cope well and strengthen their resilience. Watch Peace At Home founder Ruth Freeman and teacher Aaron Weintraub’s lively discussion about this important topic.

Child and adolescent therapists tend to differ widely in their approaches to including parents in treatment. However it can make a difference when you understand your child’s goals in therapy, adjust parenting approaches based on consideration of your child’s challenges and recognize when your child is or isn’t making progress. Sometimes as parents we need to consider whether we have mental health challenges that may be affecting our child. Parent involvement in therapy varies based on age, strategies being used by the therapist and parent capacities. This conversation will highlight some best practices for parents who have children in therapy and answer any and all questions you may have about your child’s therapy experience.

Parents are reeling from acts of violence in schools. This conversation was hosted following the Uvalde, Texas incident and we were thinking about those families who lost young ones attending school where they should be safe. Sadly this scenario has been repeated too many times since. You may be feeling overwhelmed with fear, sinking into despair, totally disconnected as losses mount up, or shifting among all of these sensations. At the same time, you may be finding it nearly impossible to drop your child off at school but want to protect them from fear. Coming together with others and sharing our experiences is one piece of repairing these emotional injuries.
