Parents are reeling from recent acts of violence and now thinking about Texas families who lost young ones attending school where they should be safe. You may be feeling overwhelmed with fear, sinking into despair, totally disconnected as losses mount up, or shifting among all of these sensations. At the same time, you may be finding it nearly impossible to drop your child off at school but want to protect them from fear. Coming together with others and sharing our experiences is one piece of repairing these emotional injuries. Participants in this Peace At Home Parenting session will be able to:

  • Recognize the role that parents play in helping children feel safe
  • Define and apply self-regulation and co-regulation during difficult times
  • Develop coping mechanisms to deal with stress and worry for yourself as a parent and with your children
  • Support your child to build overall resilience and optimism
  • Apply communication approaches that help children remember there is more good in the world than danger.

Does any of this sound like your child?

  1. Clinging, crying and/or tantrums when you separate
  2. Excessive shyness, avoiding social situations
  3. Constant worry
  4. Avoiding situations or places because of fears
  5. Complaints of frequent stomach aches or headaches
  6. Sudden and frequent panic attacks

Your child may be struggling with anxiety. And you may feel frustrated and helpless. You are not alone. One in three children will experience an anxiety disorder before adulthood. Unless treated, many will grow up to be anxious adults.

Talking with your kids about drugs and alcohol can be scary. Ideally, it’s an ongoing conversation rather than one big “talk.” The good news is you can prepare yourself by planning ahead to focus on the benefits of knowledge and not on the negative consequences of behavior. It will also help to avoid assumptions, talk about expectations, assume good intentions, share resources, and commit to remain approachable no matter what. Hopefully, this can be a learning process for you and your child.

Does your child have trouble making and keeping friends?

Are you unsure about how to help?

We all hope that our children will make meaningful connections with peers and mentors. When they struggle with making friends, it is difficult not to worry. Often, our first instinct is to try to teach specific social skills and manners, but the truth is that strong relationships come from the inside out. What we call charisma can be broken down into empathy and confidence. Self-awareness and self-acceptance are the foundation of your child’s social life.

All children are sad, anxious, irritable, or aggressive at times. Occasionally kids find it challenging to sit still, pay attention, or interact with others. In most cases, these are just typical phases in their development. However, these behaviors may indicate a more serious problem in some children. Without attention, these mental health conditions can prevent children from reaching their full potential.

Whether your child is doing fine and you want to prevent future mental health issues, or just doesn’t seem like their usual self, or has actually declared concerning thoughts, you can help.

Many students hold a “fixed mindset,” which may hold them back from trying new things or reaching their full potential. They may believe they should only do things at which they are excellent. The way families and educators give feedback can reinforce a frame of mind that supports those limiting beliefs or the confidence to try new experiences. Learn about the language you can use to support courage and independence in your student. You will also gain skills in coaching your child back to confidence after a failure.
