If you’ve ever put your phone down feeling worse than when you picked it up, and picked it right back up anyway, you’re not weak-willed and neither is your kid. Something specific is happening in the brain, and understanding it is the first real step to changing it.

Layer onto that the sheer number of things a five-second scroll can offer, a laugh, a piece of news, a glimpse into a friend’s life, a break from boredom, and it makes sense that no single fix works for everyone. A teenager numbing out after a hard day at school is scrolling for a different reason than a parent checking email in the pickup line, even though it looks identical from the outside.
That’s actually useful information, because it means the goal isn’t to fight the phone. It’s to get curious about what it’s standing in for. A few places to start this week:
Name what the screen is doing. Before dinner, ask your child (or yourself) what you felt like right before you picked it up. Bored? Anxious? Avoiding something? You can’t replace a habit you haven’t identified.
Build in a friction point. Partial reinforcement works because the next scroll is one thumb-flick away. Charging phones in a different room overnight, or leaving them in a bag during homework, adds just enough friction to break the automatic reach.
Model the pause out loud. Parents’ own phone habits are one of the strongest predictors of a child’s screen relationship. Saying “I’m going to put my phone in the other room for a bit” isn’t just modeling, it’s a small, repeated proof that stepping away is possible.
Protect one predictable no-phone window. Not a full digital detox, just one recurring pocket of the day, dinner, the drive to school, the last twenty minutes before bed, where everyone knows screens aren’t in the room.
None of this requires getting the neuroscience exactly right. It requires noticing the pull, naming it, and building small structures that make the next step off the phone a little easier than the last one.
