Of course our home is a safe place.” Think again. Your behavior sets the tone. Every day brings something new to worry over and the blurry lines between work and home make it hard to leave your stress at the door. What your bring home – your kids pick up.  The good news is that the skills you need to manage the anxiety of work, home, and the world are the same.

While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. This class will help you define the problem and apply strategies to work with your child and the school in ways that encourage compassion and confidence.

School refusal, also known as school avoidance, is a misunderstood and complex challenge. While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. In some cases, students have trouble leaving their homes at all. Children with school refusal behaviors often may complain of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches before school, or repeatedly ask to visit the school nurse.

“Tiger parenting” is characterized by strict discipline and high expectations for academic success, commonly observed in Asian communities. However, this concept oversimplifies the complex nature of parenting practices in their unique cultural and family contexts. Gaining awareness about how our childhood experiences impact us as adults can free us up to live our lives with more ease and joy.

Child and adolescent therapists tend to differ widely in their approaches to including parents in treatment. However it can make a difference when you understand your child’s goals in therapy, adjust parenting approaches based on consideration of your child’s challenges and recognize when your child is or isn’t making progress. Sometimes as parents we need to consider whether we have mental health challenges that may be affecting our child. Parent involvement in therapy varies based on age, strategies being used by the therapist and parent capacities. This conversation will highlight some best practices for parents who have children in therapy and answer any and all questions you may have about your child’s therapy experience.

Previously hosted live class exclusively for Ketchum. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Parents are reeling from recent acts of violence and now thinking about Texas families who lost young ones attending school where they should be safe. You may be feeling overwhelmed with fear, sinking into despair, totally disconnected as losses mount up, or shifting among all of these sensations. At the same time, you may be finding it nearly impossible to drop your child off at school but want to protect them from fear. Coming together with others and sharing our experiences is one piece of repairing these emotional injuries. Participants in this Peace At Home Parenting session will be able to:

  • Recognize the role that parents play in helping children feel safe
  • Define and apply self-regulation and co-regulation during difficult times
  • Develop coping mechanisms to deal with stress and worry for yourself as a parent and with your children
  • Support your child to build overall resilience and optimism
  • Apply communication approaches that help children remember there is more good in the world than danger.
