Challenges & Solutions

It has been said that perfectionism is a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or appearances. Join us to discover how perfectionism can affect you and your children, and strategies that you can use to reduce it within your family.  The tendency toward perfectionism has increased significantly among young people over the past 30 years. It can be associated with depression, anxiety, eating disorders and even suicide. The needs to feel accepted and to be cared about tend to drive perfectionism and without treatment, may get worse over time.

Perfectionists strive for flawlessness in themselves and/or in others. If you’re wondering whether you have these tendencies, the chances are that you do to one degree or another.

Challenges & Solutions

  • Are you constantly solving your child’s problems?
  • Do conflicts arise over challenges that might not be yours to fix?
  • Do you wish your child could handle challenges more effectively?

This workshop will help you identify who “owns” a problem—whether it’s yours or your child’s responsibility—and how to approach it. By understanding this distinction, you can avoid unnecessary conflicts, reduce stress, and empower your child to become a capable problem solver.

When teens see themselves as problem solvers, they’re less likely to engage in risky behaviors, including substance use or self-harm. Teaching your child how to solve problems strengthens their emotional intelligence, preparing them for success in relationships, at work, and in life now and in the future. Join Peace at Home Founder Ruth E Freeman, LCSW to explore strategies that make life easier for you and your family while fostering your child’s independence and resilience.

Challenges & Solutions

Are you a parent who loves seeing your kids bond with their grandparents but struggles with boundaries over discipline, bedtime, or screen time? Or are you a grandparent who cherishes time with your grandchildren but feels challenged by new parenting styles?

If concerns have been building but you’re hesitant to express them, you’re not alone. A recent C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital study found that nearly half of parents report disagreements with grandparents over parenting choices, yet many remain silent. When issues go unresolved, relationships can suffer, and in some cases, parents may limit grandparents’ access—a loss felt most deeply by the children.

Join Peace at Home Founder Ruth E. Freeman, LCSW, and expert Cora Megan D’Allesandro, MA, as they dive into the dynamics of the grandparent-parent-child triangle, helping families address challenges and strengthen relationships for the long-term benefit of everyone involved.

Each of us grows up in a unique family and when we come together as a couple, we don’t usually talk about our parenting beliefs until children are actually on the scene. Parenting differences between partners can be helpful, but over time those conflicting styles can become problematic. These differences can cause undue stress on a marriage and on children as well. But there are practical strategies you can use to get on the same page about common parenting disagreements.

We’ll touch on sugar, screens and children’s emotions as examples of key areas where parents may differ. Join us to understand conflicting parenting styles and gain strategies to resolve your conflicts as a team.

Join Peace at Home Founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW and Advisor and Expert, Aaron Weintraub, MS, to start the new year on the same page.

Raise Happy Children: Parenting for Optimism and Resilience (OMG)

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Parents sometimes feel discouraged when their children want more toys, the newest technology, or the coolest sneakers that they believe will make them really happy. And maybe those things will work…for a few hours or a couple of days. How often do we get caught up in what media tells us will bring joy into our lives?

Let’s explore what really makes our kids happy?

Research tells us that “things” don’t really make us happy. While temperament is inborn, parents can actually help children increase optimism (positive outlook and hopefulness) and resilience (ability to effectively bounce back from challenges). These capacities are strongly connected to well-being and success.

Let’s examine your day to day interactions and consider approaches that will increase these important traits in yourself and your children. You will also gain the courage to set limits on “stuff” and focus on what counts in building a happy family.
