Challenges & Solutions

Rapid growth, exploration and risk taking are all part of teen development. Taking risks give teens a chance to test their abilities and learn more about themselves. Some risks, however, can be harmful and have lasting effects on your child’s health and well-being.

Two of parents’ biggest concerns right now regarding teen health and safety are vaping and cannabis. Vaping has become one of the most popular forms of substance use among young people, despite the growing evidence of its health risks and harms. While nicotine is a common substance used by vaping teens, daily cannabis use in different forms is at a significant level. Whether your child has not tried these substances or has already begun to use or is using regularly, this workshop is for you.

When talking about vaping, nicotine and cannabis with your child, it is helpful to know the myths and the facts. For example, your teen may say, “It’s harmless because it is natural,” or “It’s not addictive,” or “It doesn’t affect my thinking or my grades.” However, research shows that substance use can cause serious problems with learning, feelings, and health. It’s important for you to have informed conversations with your teen. Trust your gut and get the facts. Parent knowledge, communication, and monitoring can make a big difference in keeping your child safe.

Understand and Support Your Neurodivergent Child: From Misbehavior to Stress Response

Challenges & Solutions

We often view kids’ challenging behaviors as misbehavior – that is on purpose or even manipulation to gain or avoid something. This point of view is sadly common in families and even in schools. In order to correct the behavior we don’t want, we tend to “discipline” our children which commonly means consequences, time-outs or punishment. Even though largely outdated and sometimes harmful, most adults believe that these approaches “teach” children to behave in more appropriate or expected ways.

In contrast, science tells us that what is often viewed as misbehavior is actually a stress response. When a child feels stressed or unsafe on the inside, challenging behaviors are what we see on the outside. And neurodivergent children, like those with Autism or ADHD, are even more vulnerable to feeling stressed than neurotypical children. Let’s work on this together.

Challenges & Solutions

The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind.  – Bessel van der Kolk, MD

Learning loss, undeveloped social-emotional skills, soaring anxiety, depression and self-harm are among the many issues our children are facing. Post-pandemic parenting is not for the faint of heart. While you are struggling to maintain your own wellbeing, meet work demands and care for your family at the same time, your kids are dealing with challenges that are more intense than we have ever imagined. Where do you start and what really matters?

The good and bad news is that your everyday interactions with your child have a powerful influence on their emotional wellbeing. But what kinds of interactions really make a difference? And why do they matter?

This workshop highlights the nature of stress as it relates to your children, the impact of family conflict, and the power of everyday connection and joy. Without recognizing that certain behaviors tell a story about your child’s unmet needs or the mismatch between our expectations and our kids’ capacities, it’s easy to miss important signs and symptoms. Sometimes we even make things worse in our efforts to remedy the problems. Let’s do this together.

“The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind.”  – Bessel van de Kolk
