Body Positivity: Model Healthy Behaviors

January 26, 2023 8:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Stephanie Rondeau,MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS, CHC

Challenges & Solutions

How can we prioritize health and wellness in a positive way?

There can be a fine line between encouraging healthy habits in our children and creating negative thoughts about body image and self-perception. We want the best for our children, but often forget that they are watching how we treat ourselves and model their own behaviors after that.

Child and adolescent therapists tend to differ widely in their approaches to including parents in treatment. However it can make a difference when you understand your child’s goals in therapy, adjust parenting approaches based on consideration of your child’s challenges and recognize when your child is or isn’t making progress. Sometimes as parents we need to consider whether we have mental health challenges that may be affecting our child. Parent involvement in therapy varies based on age, strategies being used by the therapist and parent capacities. This conversation will highlight some best practices for parents who have children in therapy and answer any and all questions you may have about your child’s therapy experience.

The back to school transition can cause jitters or worse for both you and your child. The good news is that the best thing you can do for your child is to take care of your self. We are built to reflect each other’s emotions. When children display intense feelings and behaviors, our brains naturally reflect those. We start to feel stressed, angry, or overwhelmed just like our kids. Join us and learn practical tools to help you be a calm center for your family as your child returns to school.

This session will prepare you to:

● Apply simple calming strategies to use every day and during challenging times

● Recognize the ways your own emotions may affect your child, and vice versa

Stress and Your Reaction: Make Personal Changes for More Peace at Home

Join us for this expert led live class. A recording of the class with handouts will be available once the class is complete.

Maybe you call it stress, maybe you call it anxiety. But we all know that many of us are worn out from just surviving and looking for ways to thrive. Let’s talk.

First, a quick biology lesson. When stress overwhelms your coping capacity, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. Your body’s response (feeling activated) is intended to feel unpleasant (anxiety) enough to drive you to take action to resolve the situation in as short a time as possible.

However, work and family situations can seem like they cannot be resolved and we may be chronically “fired up.” This leads to our bodies stimulating even more of a physiological response to regain control and we become “hyperactivated” (or angry) at ourselves or others or both. Sound familiar?

This session will help you evaluate your personal and family practices in order to make some much-needed changes to how you respond to stress.

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

All children are sad, anxious, irritable, or aggressive at times. Occasionally kids find it challenging to sit still, pay attention, or interact with others. In most cases, these are just typical phases in their development. However, these behaviors may indicate a more serious problem in some children. Without attention, these mental health conditions can prevent children from reaching their full potential.

Whether your child is doing fine and you want to prevent future mental health issues, or just doesn’t seem like their usual self, or has actually declared concerning thoughts, you can help.
