Does your child have trouble making and keeping friends?

Are you unsure about how to help?

We all hope that our children will make meaningful connections with peers and mentors. When they struggle with making friends, it is difficult not to worry. Often, our first instinct is to try to teach specific social skills and manners, but the truth is that strong relationships come from the inside out. What we call charisma can be broken down into empathy and confidence. Self-awareness and self-acceptance are the foundation of your child’s social life.

But there are practical strategies you can use to get on the same page about common parenting disagreements.

We’ll touch on sugar, screens and children’s emotions as examples of key areas where parents may differ. Join us to understand conflicting parenting styles and gain strategies to resolve your conflicts as a team.

Who Owns the Problem? Hint, It’s Not You. How To Teach Problem Solving and Resilience (2025)

May 15, 2024 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

  • Do you find yourself trying to solve your child’s problems?
  • Do you sometimes get into conflict about problems that aren’t really yours to solve?
  • Do you wish your child would be more effective at dealing with challenges?

When you recognize who “owns” a problem, you can determine who is responsible for solving it. Once you know which problems are yours to solve and which problems are your child’s responsibility to solve, life gets a lot easier.

We often fall into conflicts when we try to solve our kids’ problems. And most importantly, when teens perceive that they are problem solvers, they are less likely to use substances, less likely to harm themselves or others and they are all around more competent. When you teach your child problem solving skills, you are strengthening their emotional intelligence. This asset will help them succeed in relationships, at work and in most endeavors now and in the future.

Perfectionism and Your Family: Find Calm, Connection and Cooperation in Letting Go (2025)

March 23, 2023 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

It has been said that perfectionism is a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or appearances. Join us to discover how perfectionism can affect you and your children, and strategies that you can use to reduce it within your family.  The tendency toward perfectionism has increased significantly among young people over the past 30 years. It can be associated with depression, anxiety, eating disorders and even suicide. The needs to feel accepted and to be cared about tend to drive perfectionism and without treatment, may get worse over time.

Perfectionists strive for flawlessness in themselves and/or in others. If you’re wondering whether you have these tendencies, the chances are that you do to one degree or another.

A Two-Part Workshop for Parents

Adolescence is a time of growth, change, and increasing autonomy—but it can also bring challenges related to mental health, social pressures, and identity development. Research consistently shows that a strong parent-child relationship is one of the most powerful protective factors for a child’s well-being. But what actually makes that relationship with your child strong?

In this interactive two-part workshop you will gain evidence-based strategies to strengthen resilience, foster optimism, and support your tweens and teens as they navigate today’s complex world.

Session 1: The Power of Connection–Protecting Mental Health and Social Development  (3.26.25 12pm) This session focuses on how positive parent-youth relationships serve as a critical buffer against anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Learn More about this session here.

Session 2: Preparing for Independence – Communication, Resilience & the Path to Adulthood. As tweens and teens prepare for adulthood, the way you communicate and set expectations plays a crucial role in your youth’s ability to launch successfully.  In this session at 12pm on April 22nd,  we’ll continue our focus on how positive parent-youth relationships serve as a critical buffer against anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

Each session will include evidence-based strategies, interactive discussions, and actionable takeaways to strengthen your relationship with your tween or teen. Whether your child is struggling or thriving, these workshops will provide valuable insights to help them develop the resilience, optimism, and skills they need to navigate adolescence and confidently transition into adulthood.
