Challenges & Solutions

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by your child’s big emotions or challenging behaviors?

Do you find yourself struggling to stay calm?

You are not alone.

Human beings are built to reflect each other’s emotions. When our children display intense feelings and behaviors, our brains naturally reflect those. You probably start to feel stressed, angry, fearful, or overwhelmed just like your kids. And you can’t help your child solve their problem or manage their behaviors if your own brain is stressed. So what can you do differently? You will learn practical strategies to help you be a calm center for your child’s emotional world.

Mental Health Essentials for Parents: Knowledge and Skills to Support Your Child (Yale WorkLife)

October 16, 2024 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind. – Bessel van der Kolk, MD

All children are sad, anxious, irritable, or aggressive at times. Occasionally kids find it challenging to sit still, pay attention, or interact with others. In most cases, these are just typical phases in their development. However, these behaviors may indicate a more serious problem in some children. Without attention, these mental health conditions can prevent children from reaching their full potential.  Whether your child is doing fine and you want to prevent future mental health issues, or just doesn’t seem like their usual self, or has actually declared concerning thoughts, you can help.

Join Peace at Home Founder, Ruth Freeman, LCSW, for this important workshop.

Helicopter Parenting or Mindful Underparenting: What’s Good Enough?

October 15, 2024 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Experts

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

The US Surgeon General has declared that the stress and mental health challenges faced by parents constitute a serious public health concern for our country. Almost half of parents say, most days their stress is completely overwhelming.

Join Peace At Home founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW and teacher Aaron Weintraub, MS for an illuminating conversation about focusing on what really helps kids thrive.

Take some time to reflect on approaches from “Helicopter Parenting” to “Mindful Underparenting.”

Consider simple, good enough parenting strategies that bring out the best in your kids while lowering stress in both your mind and your family.

Intensive vs Balanced Parenting –

“Intensive” or “Helicopter Parenting” is a popular trend that may be part of the problem. Characterized by a relentless focus on children’s achievement and a high level of involvement in their activities, this approach is rooted in the belief that investing enormous amounts of time and energy into a child’s development will yield the best outcomes. However, this approach can come with significant drawbacks, not the least of which is stress on the whole family.

An alternative approach might be what one observer called “mindful underparenting” – getting more comfortable with kids feeling bored, leaving screens at home while kids get fussy about routine activities like food shopping, etc.  Many parents feel they need permission to take a step back from parenting behaviors that seem rooted in fear and doubt about our children’s capacities to find their way in the world. Can we define “Good Enough Parenting” that is about creating clear limits and boundaries, yet allowing for enough freedom within those limits for true learning to occur. Can we let our kids feel some discomfort, let them struggle, and just support them work it through?

You are not alone. The world of Special Education is important to our children, but can be quite mysterious to parents.

This class will help you understand the laws behind your child’s rights. You will learn about what to expect from two different kinds of services for children with disabilities: 504 Plans and Individual Education Programs (IEPs).The difference between the two is confusing to many parents. When students’ parents are involved in school, kids tend to have higher grades and test scores, better attendance and higher rates of completing their homework. Returning to school means disrupting the summer routines that you and your child have just settled into just when your child needs consistency the most. Children are happiest when they know what to expect. Arguments, misbehaviors, and school resistance often start when they feel that a rule is unfair or unexpected. When you talk about family rules and routines together as a family, it helps everyone feel better about what to expect even when they don’t get exactly what they want.

Technology and the Alpha Generation: Start the Conversation and End the Power Struggles

April 03, 2024 8:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Amy Alamar Amy Alamar,EdD

Challenges & Solutions

We’ve moved beyond the screen time power struggle. Meet Generation Alpha, the first group of kids who entered the world surrounded by technology.

Alphas are the children of millennials born from 2010 onwards and are the most tech-savvy generation the world has ever seen. While millennial parents have been learning how to use the latest phones and tablets since their teen years, the oldest Alphas started using these devices before they could talk.

Alphas will communicate faster than their parents in a global, tech-driven environment. Alphas will grow up to do jobs that don’t yet exist. While digital skills will be important, they will need emotional intelligence and social confidence as well as other skills to succeed in both work and personal relationships.

At the same time, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory Report indicates that nearly all teens use social media and we cannot conclude it is safe with regard to their mental health. And over half of parents say their kids are “addicted” and, even among young children, craving for screen time is rapidly accelerating.

Workshop participants will gain practical strategies that both parents and children can use to truly embrace this digital frontier without fear and within reason. Parents can’t learn faster or better than Gen Alpha when it comes to technology – but we can learn with them. Join Peace At Home experts and other parents to consider the issues and define strategies that tackle this challenge with calm, clarity and even optimism. Let’s do this together.

Sugar, Screens, and Routines: Find the Right Balance for Your Family (2025)

December 19, 2023 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

When you just need time to get things done, extending kids’ screen time seems like an easy fix.  Maybe you just agree to another treat so your child will give you some peace. These small habits may result in less cooperation, calm, and even happiness in your family. These small habits, however, can become patterns that lead to more problems.  Let’s talk about some other approaches that work.

Daily schedules are busy and parents are coping with more and more demands. A recent report tells us that 66% of working parents are experiencing “parental burnout.” Sadly this is happening at the same time as a mental health crisis among our children and teens. Shortcuts like more screen time and sugar might be considered “parenting hacks.” And they work in the moment. However, in the long run, they often result in less cooperation, calm, and even happiness in your family. Sugar and screens are associated with pleasure. We adults use these solutions to get through the day as well. What’s the problem? We are learning that the biology of pleasure is actually in contrast to the biology of happiness. We do a lot of things that make us feel good in the moment but don’t lead to happiness or a sense of well-being. Kids look to us to help them know how to feel about the world. Are we passing on quick hits of pleasure habits that lead to happiness?

Challenges & Solutions

We often view kids’ challenging behaviors as misbehavior – that is intentional or even manipulative to gain or avoid something. However, science tells us that what is often viewed as misbehavior is actually a stress response. When a child feels stressed or unsafe on the inside, challenging behaviors are often what we see on the outside. And neurodivergent children, like those with autism or ADHD, are even more vulnerable to feeling stressed than neurotypical children. Many adults believe that time-outs or punishment will help, but you’ve probably noticed that isn’t true and it can be harmful to your child. Let’s work on this together.

Teens, Depression and Anxiety: What Really Helps? (2025)

May 21, 2024 1:00 pm EDT/EST

Experts

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Denise Parent Denise Parent,LMFT Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

Starting at 12 years old, your teen’s brain is in a process of intense physical, cognitive and social development. They are becoming more aware of themselves and forming identity – recognizing and deciding who they really are.  As their brain changes and struggles to adapt to their social environment, they may sometimes be moody, anxious and irritable. If you notice them becoming withdrawn, lacking energy, changing eating or sleeping habits, not enjoying things they used to, even fighting or getting into trouble with peers and adults, they might be experiencing depression.

Learning about the signs and symptoms of depression can help you to support healthy coping and growth. This session will give you some ideas about what support really looks like and how to avoid unhelpful approaches that are easy to fall into when you are worried about your child.

Family Gatherings and Everyday Conversations: Let’s Talk About Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation

November 06, 2023 12:00 pm EDT/EST

Experts

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW Peace at Home Parenting Expert Cornelius Holmes Cornelius Holmes,LPC, NCC

Challenges & Solutions

When your child approaches you to share or process their thoughts and feelings about gender identity or sexual orientation they are trusting you with their deepest sense of self. These conversations can spark fears for their wellbeing and it can be a struggle in that moment to know how to respond without rejecting or discounting their experience. These issues may challenge your values or beliefs. It might seem that being “straight” isn’t cool and your child wants to explore other options to be more like their friends.

As the holidays approach, you can anticipate that these issues may come up at the dinner table with your extended family. And that might be yet another trigger for you.

Listen in on Peace At Home founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW and Experts Cornelius Holmes, LPC, NCC for a conversation that will prepare you for an open, ongoing dialogue with your child or teen that is candid, authentic and supportive.

Often, our first instinct is to try to teach specific social skills and manners but the truth is that strong relationships come from the inside out.
