Students, parents, and educators are facing dramatically increased academic loss and a widening of the achievement gap. How can we address the loss and build understanding? Evidence suggest that we start with building empathy. Compassion will help us embrace the academic challenge as a community. In this class we will look at the effects of school absences due to health, behavior, and current events. We will also introduce and review effective strategies to build a strong academic foundation.

After this session, educators will be able to:

  • Recognize the specific concerns related to academic loss
  • Initiate community building toward understanding
  • Apply strategies that will allow you to approach academics with a useful, fresh perspective

What have students experienced, what do they need, and how can we begin to capture their attention and engage them in learning? What are practical, effective way to emphasize emotional safety and equity for in-person and hybrid environments. This quick class focuses on how to build and maintain personal connections through our education work with a focus on recovery from a very challenging year. 

After this session, educators will be able to:

  • Foster community and nurture relationships
  • Contribute toward a common vision for the community
  • Apply approaches to effectively establish and/or re-establish routine
