Overwhelmed with your child’s challenging behaviors?

Hoping for more patience and struggling to stay calm?

Think sometimes there must be a better way?  You are not alone.

We are built to reflect each other’s emotions. When children display intense feelings and behaviors, our brains naturally reflect those. We start to feel stressed, angry, or overwhelmed just like our kids.Young children thrive in calm and playful families. Play is the best way to help your child learn and grow. It strengthens the parent-child connection, your child’s love of learning, and enthusiasm for life. Play builds social skills and improves cooperation.  Join us and learn practical tools to help you be a calm center for your family and use the power of play to signal safety and set the stage for cooperation and joy. After this class, you will be able to:

  • Apply simple calming strategies to use every day and during challenging times
  • Recognize the ways play helps your child grow, connect and cooperate
  •  Apply every day, simple ways of engaging in happy and meaningful play with your child

Maybe you call it stress, maybe you call it anxiety. But we all know that many of us are worn out from just surviving and looking for ways to thrive. Let’s talk.

First, a quick biology lesson. When stress overwhelms your coping capacity, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode, and your body’s response (feeling activated) is intended to feel unpleasant (anxiety) enough to drive you to take action to resolve the situation in as short a time as possible.

However, work and family situations can seem like they cannot be resolved. We are chronically “fired up.” This leads to our bodies stimulating even more of a physiological response to regain control and we become “hyperactivated” (or angry) at ourselves or others or both. Sound familiar?

Summer is a great time to evaluate your personal and family practices in order to make some much-needed changes to how you respond to stress.

This class will prepare you to:

  • Recognize the impact of sustained stress on you and your family
  • Identify specific sources of stress in your family life and apply strategies to address those
  • Identify and apply practical strategies to reduce family stress

This class was not recorded. It was delivered on Ketchum’s platform.

Today, a government in which women have never had an equal voice reached deep into the most private corners of a woman’s life to tell her the choice over what she does with her body is no longer her own…Right now, there are people all over the U.S. who are recommitting to the work ahead. To ensure that women’s voices are respected in a clinic or doctor’s office, we must also ensure that they are heard at all levels of society—in their homes and workplaces, in capitols and C-suites. That’s how we create a future where decisions are made by women, not for them. – Melinda French Gates

You may feel numb, overwhelmed, confused, frightened. You may feel a combination of these or a whole range of other emotions during this turbulent moment in our country. Peace At Home Parenting Solutions founder, Ruth E. Freeman, LCSW and Fairfield University professor, Tanika Eaves, PhD, LCSW, will help us find ways do the following:

  1. Recognize that the threat of the government controlling women’s bodies and right to choose may trigger profound emotions and, in some cases, traumatic memories in our minds or bodies. And that we deserve support to handle those overwhelming experiences.
  1. Keep in the forefront of our discussions the fact that unwanted children suffer deeply as do their parents. For some people the very fact of having children is a trigger to trauma memories that happen in our minds and/or bodies and affect everyone around us.
  1. Remember that we will all benefit from safe spaces to talk with our families, among friends, in communities and at work about this decision. It is important to plan together and take mindful action steps to create those safe spaces. Healing takes place most effectively in relationship with others, even though our trauma sometimes whispers that this is not so.

This class will prepare you to:

  • Develop perspective during difficult times
  • Identify anxiety and stress
  • Define self-regulation and co-regulation and help children do the same
  • Identify and apply strategies that help both adults and children feel safer even in difficult times
