Talking to Kids about Gun Violence explores ways you can help your kids deal with violent events like war and school shootings. Our most important suggestion is to manage what kids are seeing and hearing (online, tv, social media, YouTube videos, TikTok, video games, radio, etc). Even when kids seem engrossed in activities, they are picking up on what is going on around them. Each time young children see an image of a violent act, they believe it is happening at that moment, even if it is the same image shown over and and over again. Watch or just listen to this important previously-recorded discussion.

Having strategies to maintain calm and help our children feel safe in an unpredictable world can help. Please review the handout below for important tips and tools to give you clarity and confidence.

If you are the parent of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) child, you probably have a lot of questions. Your support is key to your child’s well-being, but you may have to go through your own process to get there. Start with, “I’m here for you and love you,” even if you don’t understand and aren’t ok at the moment. Plan to get your own support so that you can process your deepest emotions and concerns, while helping your child to deal with their own. Peace At Home guest experts Barbara Esgalhado, PhD and Poshi Walker, MSW discuss with founder Ruth Freeman, LCSW to gain some ideas about helping your child thrive, while exploring your own path to understanding and genuine acceptance.

Gifted students are more likely to hold a “fixed mindset,” which may hold them back from trying new things or reaching their full potential. They may believe they should only do things at which they are excellent. The way families and educators give feedback can reinforce a frame of mind that supports those limiting beliefs or the confidence to try new experiences. Learn about language you can use to support courage and independence in your gifted student. You will also gain skills in coaching your child back to confidence after a failure.
