Overwhelmed with your child’s challenging behaviors?

Hoping for more patience and struggling to stay calm?

Think sometimes there must be a better way?

You are not alone.

We are built to reflect each other’s emotions. When children display intense feelings and behaviors, our brains naturally reflect those. We start to feel stressed, angry, or overwhelmed just like our kids. Join us and learn practical tools to help you be a calm center for your family.

Young children thrive in calm and playful families. Play is the best way to help your child learn and grow. It strengthens the parent-child connection, your child’s love of learning, and enthusiasm for life. Play builds social skills and improves cooperation. We’ll offer a hands-on opportunity to play with your children at this workshop, including individual coaching and discussion with our trainers.

After this class, you will be able to:

● Apply simple calming strategies to use every day and during challenging times

● Recognize the ways play helps your child grow, connect and cooperate

● Apply every day, simple ways of engaging in happy and meaningful play with your child

Does any of this sound like your child?

  • Clinging, crying and/or tantrums when you separate
  • Excessive shyness, avoiding social situations
  • Constant worry
  • Avoiding situations or places because of fears
  • Complaints of frequent stomach aches or headaches
  • Sudden and frequent panic attacks

Your child may be struggling with anxiety. And you may feel frustrated and helpless. You are not alone. One in three children will experience an anxiety disorder before adulthood. Unless treated, many will grow up to be anxious adults. This class will help you better understand the nature of anxiety, refrain from reinforcing your child’s distress by accommodating behaviors, and apply simple strategies to handle day to day challenges.

The way we praise children affects how they see themselves. The language we use can actually help or hinder their desire to learn and their level of effort, as well as their ability to stick with a challenging task. You might be surprised to learn that telling your child how smart they are can actually decrease effort. Research tells us that we can help even discouraged children cope with frustration and see failure as an opportunity to learn rather than giving up. Use specific, powerful feedback to encourage your child to take appropriate risks and feel more confident to try new things.

After this class, you will be able to:

● Explain to your child how their brains change when they try new things

● Give feedback using language that supports your child’s self-worth and enthusiasm for learning

● Coach your child back to confidence after a failure

● Recognize areas in your life where your own fixed thinking may affect your child’s behavior and self-worth

Parents sometimes feel discouraged when their children want more toys, the newest technology or the coolest sneakers that they believe will make them really happy. And maybe those things will work…for a few hours or a couple of days. What really makes our kids happy? How often do we get caught up in what media tells us will bring joy into our lives?

Research tells us that “things” don’t really make us happy. While temperament is inborn, parents can actually help children increase optimism (positive outlook and hopefulness) and resilience (ability to effectively bounce back from challenges). These capacities are strongly connected to well-being and success. You will examine your day to day interactions and consider approaches that will increase these important traits in yourself and your children. You will also gain the courage to set limits on “stuff” and focus on what counts in building a happy family.

The transition back to work from Family Leave can be challenging. Birthing mothers strive to balance involvement in the world of work with the biological and emotional changes that accompany a recent birth. Parent involvement with baby’s total care can be immensely rewarding as well as exhausting, and relinquishing some of that care to others is often anxiety-provoking. Parents gain easy access to expert information and guidance from the Welcome Baby – Welcome Back to Work library while on Family Leave and as they return to work. From eating, sleeping and just surviving to answering questions like, “Will work harm my relationship with my baby?” busy parents appreciate quick evidence-based solutions to everyday challenges as well as major concerns.

In this roundtable about “Little Kids, Big Emotions,” we will explore the reasons young children up to 5 years old react strongly and have meltdowns – sometimes it’s predictable but other times, it’s just not! You will have a chance to ask questions, share your ideas and hear from other parents as well as Peace At Home teachers. Our conversation will include:
• Ways to prevent children’s feelings of overwhelm
• What to do when big feelings overwhelm your young child
• How to gradually help your child cope with disappointment and frustration

If you have time you may want to view the following classes in advance of our conversation:

*Taming Tantrums: Recognize Triggers and Plan Ahead
*Positive Discipline for Toddlers and Preschoolers
