Challenges & Solutions

  • Are you concerned about your child’s progress in school but afraid to have your child “labeled”?
  • Are you new to the process and feel confused about how special education works?
  • Is your child already receiving special education services, but you’re still feeling confused?

You are not alone. The world of Special Education is important to our children, but can be quite mysterious to parents.

This workshop will help you understand the laws behind your child’s rights. You will learn about what to expect from two different kinds of services for children with disabilities: 504 Plans and Individual Education Programs (IEPs).The difference between the two is confusing to many parents. It’s important, however, to recognize the difference so you can be an effective part of your child’s planning team and so you can evaluate whether your school is effectively meeting your child’s needs.

While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. This class will help you define the problem and apply strategies to work with your child and the school in ways that encourage compassion and confidence.

School refusal, also known as school avoidance, is a misunderstood and complex challenge. While school refusal is often viewed as misbehavior, in most cases students are simply too anxious to enter the school environment. In some cases, students have trouble leaving their homes at all. Children with school refusal behaviors often may complain of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches before school, or repeatedly ask to visit the school nurse.

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Gifted students are more likely to hold a “fixed mindset,” which may hold them back from trying new things or reaching their full potential. They may believe they should only do things at which they are excellent. The way families and educators give feedback can reinforce a frame of mind that supports those limiting beliefs or the confidence to try new experiences. Learn about language you can use to support courage and independence in your gifted student. You will also gain skills in coaching your child back to confidence after a failure.

Students, parents, and educators are facing dramatically increased academic loss and a widening of the achievement gap. How can we address the loss and build understanding? Evidence suggest that we start with building empathy. Compassion will help us embrace the academic challenge as a community. In this class we will look at the effects of school absences due to health, behavior, and current events. We will also introduce and review effective strategies to build a strong academic foundation.
