Understand and Support Your Neurodivergent Child: From Misbehavior to Stress Response

February 15, 2024 12:00 pm EDT/EST
Take This Workshop

Expert

Peace At Home Parenting Expert Michelle Sebak Michelle Sebak,MS

Challenges & Solutions

We often view kids’ challenging behaviors as misbehavior – that is on purpose or even manipulation to gain or avoid something. This point of view is sadly common in families and even in schools. In order to correct the behavior we don’t want, we tend to “discipline” our children which commonly means consequences, time-outs or punishment. Even though largely outdated and sometimes harmful, most adults believe that these approaches “teach” children to behave in more appropriate or expected ways.

In contrast, science tells us that what is often viewed as misbehavior is actually a stress response. When a child feels stressed or unsafe on the inside, challenging behaviors are what we see on the outside. And neurodivergent children, like those with Autism or ADHD, are even more vulnerable to feeling stressed than neurotypical children. Let’s work on this together.

Parents are reeling from recent acts of violence and now thinking about Texas families who lost young ones attending school where they should be safe. You may be feeling overwhelmed with fear, sinking into despair, totally disconnected as losses mount up, or shifting among all of these sensations. Parents are reeling from acts of violence in schools. This conversation was hosted following the Uvalde, Texas incident and we were thinking about those families who lost young ones attending school where they should be safe. Sadly this scenario has been repeated too many times since. You may be feeling overwhelmed with fear, sinking into despair, totally disconnected as losses mount up, or shifting among all of these sensations. At the same time, you may be finding it nearly impossible to drop your child off at school but want to protect them from fear. Raise Happy Children: Parenting for Optimism and Resilience

November 30, 2021 12:00 pm EDT
Take This Workshop

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

Previously hosted live class. Access the recording and handouts by clicking on the Course Lesson below.

Parents sometimes feel discouraged when their children want more toys, the newest technology, or the coolest sneakers that they believe will make them really happy. And maybe those things will work…for a few hours or a couple of days. What really makes our kids happy? How often do we get caught up in what media tells us will bring joy into our lives?

Research tells us that “things” don’t really make us happy. While temperament is inborn, parents can actually help children increase optimism (positive outlook and hopefulness) and resilience (ability to effectively bounce back from challenges). These capacities are strongly connected to well-being and success. You will examine your day to day interactions and consider approaches that will increase these important traits in yourself and your children. You will also gain the courage to set limits on “stuff” and focus on what counts in building a happy family.
