As children enter adolescence, they have a natural desire for independence. Teenagers’ desire for freedom can be scary for parents/caregivers, however, it is what gradually turns your adolescent into a healthy adult.

Class participants will be able to:

  • Recognize key factors in adolescent brain development that influence behavior
  • Identify factors that make independence during adolescence “risky”
  • Recognize the consequences of restricting independence
  • Identify and apply steps in planning with teens for situations that strengthen the independence

Are you feeling like you and your child are missing out on activities with other kids and families?

Are you wanting to explore other options for school this year?

Are you also worried about you and your family getting sick?

Forming a pod with other families might help.

A pod is a small number of families who are committed to each other’s health and well-being, agree to shared rules and practices, and spend time together while physically isolating from the rest of the world. Pods can also be a mode of education for your children.

This provides information on what pods are, how they work, and what to consider when forming them. After this class you will be able to:

  • Apply strategies to identify those families with whom you could form a pod
  • Recognize key issues you may want to consider when approaching another family
  • Identify approaches to build shared understanding and trust once you agree to form a pod
  • Consider modes of education based on pods

Studies show that youth who feel they can talk with their parents are less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as promiscuity, using substances, violence, etc. Talking isn’t lecturing and this class will strengthen your listening as well as talking skills in ways that will help protect your teens and maybe even save your sanity.

Schools face academic loss challenges every year, and in response to COVID-19 we are seeing an even greater loss and a widening of the achievement gap. So how can we address the loss and build understanding? First, we can start with building empathy, and then as a community, we can embrace the academic challenge.

Led by Peace at Home Parenting experts Amy Alamar, Ed D, and Dana Asby, MA, M Ed, this series addresses the important issues faced by educators: How do we build community and approach academics after such a challenging time in education? What have students experienced, what do they need, and how can we begin to capture their attention and engage them in learning? We will introduce practical and effective ways to emphasize emotional safety and equity for in-person and hybrid environments.

This series supports the ability of educators to:

  • Recall strategies to build resilience
  • Foster community and nurture relationships
  • Recognize and address grief
  • Establish/Re-establish routine

The teenage years can be exciting times of growth, but can be a strain on your relationship. As your child enters the tween and teen years their brain changes in ways that cause them to find their tribe of peers. This may mean that they are less likely to seek the advice and validation of adults but it doesn’t mean they don’t need your calm, consistent guidance. After taking classes in the Help Your Tweens and Teens Thrive Even When They Think You Are Ridiculous series caregivers will be able to:

  • Start and maintain an open dialogue
  • Develop an authentic and honest relationship with your child
  • Support your child in dealing with his/her social life
  • Discuss difficult subjects openly and positively
  • Apply steps to navigate teens’ romantic relationships with trust, compassion, clarity and consistency
  • Learn positive discipline that works
