The Power of Mindful Parenting to Transform Family Stress

November 07, 2024 12:00 pm EDT/EST
Take This Workshop

Expert

Peace At Home Parenting Expert Na Zhang Na Zhang,PhD, MEd

Challenges & Solutions

Mindful practice deepens our awareness and helps us act wisely as parents, even in stressful times. When we bring kindness and present-moment attention to ourselves and our relationships with our child(ren), we can see and accept our own imperfections and our past experiences (even the painful ones). This helps us support our children with more awareness and connection.

Mindful parenting is an inner practice that can be simply embedded in our daily life and is waiting for you to discover. You will learn how scientists have defined and studied mindful parenting. This new research explores the relationships between parents’ mindfulness and children’s well-being. This area of study also teaches us about best practices in everyday parenting. You will hear some of the most recent findings on the positive effects of mindfulness on our psychological and physical wellbeing, especially how mindfulness may affect our stress physiology. You will also gain mindfulness techniques you can use in everyday parenting.

  • Does the idea of talking with your child about sexual orientation and gender identity feel difficult or even a little scary?
  • Do you wonder how to raise a child to be open to those issues in themselves and an ally to others?
  • Are you concerned that your child won’t be safe or accepted or may even encounter bullying because you or they identify as LGBTQ+?

Whether you or your child identifies as LGBTQ+ or you just want to help your kids be more aware and accepting of the range of identities around them, this session is for you.

Clear communication, strong connection, acceptance, and love go a long way in all relationships. And regardless of your child’s identity, bullying is very much a reality especially as civility is diminishing in public discourse. In addition social networking technology has expanded the ways that bullying touches children’s lives. There are proactive steps you can take to equip your child with the tools they need to navigate these difficult situations confidently. Kids who have had conversations with their parents about bullying are more likely to come to their parents for support when they need it.

Join us for an honest, informative and safe space conversation on this complex topic facilitated by two Peace At Home specialists who are parents as well as professionals in the fields of mental health and family science. Let’s work together to foster a generation of confident, resilient, and empowered individuals. We’ll discuss approaches to arming our children with the skills they need to face the challenges of life with courage and grace.

Fathers and Children: Tuning Into Your Story for Closer Connections

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

We all have stories. They come from our ancestors, parents, and communities inside us. And some of those stories arise from our own unique experiences. Many of us get separated from our stories and even our most authentic selves when we try to fit in and be what others want us to be. And when we aren’t being authentic, it is hard to be close to others, even those we love deeply.

Curiosity, exploration, and reflection will lead us back to feeling, an essential portal for connecting with important people in our lives. This journey invites us to embrace empathy as a road to attachment and connection.

For many men, the most important connection is with our kids. We know that children with a secure attachment to their dads tend to be more confident and have stronger relationships with their peers. Their paths in life are easier, and that’s what we all want for our children. But how do we build those attachments when so many of us didn’t experience it with our own fathers?

We will look at our early childhood experiences where, at their best, we could feel someone feeling us. And that’s the beginning of the connection to ourselves that strengthens our parent-child attachment. We will ease our way back to feel our way forward. Awakening those sensibilities while being vulnerable is essential for birthing new authentic connections with ourselves, our kids, and others. In this safe space guided by two caring and wise dads, this workshop will offer practical solutions to this important challenge. We will have fun doing the work using music, poetry, photos, video, and role-plays to engender an interactive conversation.

Peace at Home Parenting Expert, Aaron Weintraub, MC is joined by Doug Edwards for this important workshop. Doug Edwards is founder and Program Director of Real Dads Forever, a Fatherhood Strategies Development organization. Stress and Your Reaction: Make Personal Changes for More Peace at Home

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

Maybe you call it stress, maybe you call it anxiety. But we all know that many of us are worn out from just surviving and looking for ways to thrive.

First, a quick biology lesson. When stress overwhelms your coping capacity, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. Your body’s response (feeling activated) is intended to feel unpleasant (anxiety) enough to drive you to take action to resolve the situation in as short a time as possible.

However, work and family situations can seem like they cannot be resolved and we may be chronically “fired up.” This leads to our bodies stimulating even more of a physiological response to regain control and we become “hyperactivated” (or angry) at ourselves or others or both. Sound familiar?   This workshop will help you evaluate your personal and family practices in order to make some much-needed changes to how you respond to stress.

Challenges & Solutions

The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind.  – Bessel van der Kolk, MD

Learning loss, undeveloped social-emotional skills, soaring anxiety, depression and self-harm are among the many issues our children are facing. Post-pandemic parenting is not for the faint of heart. While you are struggling to maintain your own wellbeing, meet work demands and care for your family, your kids are dealing with challenges that are more intense than we have ever imagined. Where do you start and what really matters?

The good and bad news is that your everyday interactions with your child have a powerful influence on their emotional wellbeing. But what kinds of interactions really make a difference? And why do they matter?

This workshop will highlight the nature of stress as it relates to your children, the impact of family conflict, and the power of everyday connection and joy. Without recognizing that certain behaviors tell a story about your child’s unmet needs or the mismatch between our expectations and our kids’ capacities, it’s easy to miss important signs and symptoms. Sometimes we even make things worse in our efforts to remedy the problems. Let’s do this together.

Technology and the Alpha Generation: Start the Conversation and End the Power Struggles

April 03, 2024 8:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Amy Alamar Amy Alamar,EdD

Challenges & Solutions

We’ve moved beyond the screen time power struggle. Meet Generation Alpha, the first group of kids who entered the world surrounded by technology.

Alphas are the children of millennials born from 2010 onwards and are the most tech-savvy generation the world has ever seen. While millennial parents have been learning how to use the latest phones and tablets since their teen years, the oldest Alphas started using these devices before they could talk.

Alphas will communicate faster than their parents in a global, tech-driven environment. Alphas will grow up to do jobs that don’t yet exist. While digital skills will be important, they will need emotional intelligence and social confidence as well as other skills to succeed in both work and personal relationships.

At the same time, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory Report indicates that nearly all teens use social media and we cannot conclude it is safe with regard to their mental health. And over half of parents say their kids are “addicted” and, even among young children, craving for screen time is rapidly accelerating.

Workshop participants will gain practical strategies that both parents and children can use to truly embrace this digital frontier without fear and within reason. Parents can’t learn faster or better than Gen Alpha when it comes to technology – but we can learn with them. Join Peace At Home experts and other parents to consider the issues and define strategies that tackle this challenge with calm, clarity and even optimism. Let’s do this together.

  • Do you find yourself trying to solve your child’s problems?
  • Do you sometimes get into conflict about problems that aren’t really yours to solve?
  • Do you wish your child would be more effective at dealing with challenges?

When you recognize who “owns” a problem, you can determine who is responsible for solving it. Once you know which problems are yours to solve and which problems are your child’s responsibility to solve, life gets a lot easier.

We often fall into conflicts when we try to solve our kids’ problems. And most importantly, when teens perceive that they are problem solvers, they are less likely to use substances, less likely to harm themselves or others and they are all around more competent. When you teach your child problem solving skills, you are strengthening their emotional intelligence. This asset will help them succeed in relationships, at work and in most endeavors now and in the future.

You have likely discovered that these methods are not especially effective, particularly with children who display special needs. This virtual workshop will provide practical tools and strategies to help you achieve the stronger connections and positive behaviors you are seeking.

Most agree that finding ways to fairly share responsibilities at home is very important to feeling satisfied for couples who are married or living together. However, in 2020, 55% of men said they are very satisfied with this aspect of their relationship, while only 38% of women see it the same way. And ongoing conflicts between parents isn’t great for kids. So let’s dig into these differing views and discover what really works for both partners. Everybody loses out when we don’t have equity and everybody needs to participate in recalibrating how we do things to reach equality. Join us for an enlightening conversation and discover a new, highly effective approach to solving the persistent challenge of gender equity in household tasks among heterosexual couples.

You’ll gain tools to create a more balanced and harmonious partnership with less tension over daily life and more room for fun and fulfillment.

Please note: This workshop is open to all participants, regardless of your relationship status or gender identity. The content will focus primarily on addressing gender inequity with heterosexual partnerships.

Positive Discipline and Secure Attachment: A Cultural Perspective

February 01, 2024 8:00 pm EDT/EST

Expert

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Tanika Eaves Tanika Eaves,PhD, LCSW, IMH-E®

Challenges & Solutions

Even though most parents have spanked their child at one time or another, there is an amazing amount of research that tells us about the negative effects of corporal punishment. Understanding the roots of our discipline practices may be important in understanding why we choose certain parenting practices and how they affect our children.

  • Peace at Home Expert Tanika Eaves shares her passion for children and families as well as her research skills and personal insight to her extraordinary workshop. She co-presented with her esteemed guest, Doug Edwards, founder of Real Dads Forever

This workshop took a look at the history of slavery and colonialism to think together about their role in shaping beliefs about discipline and practices presumed to be “cultural.” We will discuss how these historical traumas may have influenced certain discipline techniques and their impact on children’s emotional, mental, and behavioral well-being.

They looked at what research indicates about the kind of discipline that is both helpful and affirming to kids and increases cooperation. We will consider positive discipline and how it works. Positive discipline emphasizes understanding children’s needs and emotions while nurturing their growth and development. By using positive discipline techniques, parents build strong, trusting relationships with their children, leading to healthier emotional and social development. Science based, positive discipline approaches also tend to increase cooperation without harming children’s confidence and courage.

Mental health literacy is the ability to prevent, recognize and cope with mental health conditions.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health disorders were the most common diseases of childhood. Some are even declaring a pediatric mental health emergency. Whether your child is doing fine and you want to prevent future mental health issues, your child just doesn’t seem like their usual self, or your child has actually declared suicidal thoughts, you can help.

“The parent-child relationship is the most powerful mental health intervention known to humankind.”  – Bessel van de Kolk

In an era of heightened mental health challenges among children and adolescents, this library serves as a powerful resource for parents seeking to nurture their child’s overall well-being. Grounded in the profound impact of the parent-child relationship, this collection empowers you with the knowledge and strategies to foster a positive, mentally-healthy environment in your family. Gain insights into recognizing early signs of distress, understanding the interplay between your mental health and your child’s, and implementing proactive approaches to promote emotional resilience.

This library addresses ways to support your child with ADHD or Autism with low support needs. Many parents of children with special needs report higher than average levels of stress and conflict. Often symptoms can look like misbehavior, and children with special needs may not respond to the discipline techniques that work for other children. Diagnoses like Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD require behavioral support strategies that are specific to each child’s needs. Effective discipline is built on empathy and a balance between flexibility and consistency. It’s time to stop just surviving, and gain the tools you need to thrive and enjoy your relationship with your child, as you support their growth and development.
