The phrase “Affirming Parenting” has emerged in association with helping children explore their own gender identity such as affirming your child’s perception of themselves, advocating for their rights, seeking expertise to support your child, protecting them against gender-biased prejudice and other supportive actions. Being an Affirming Parent with children who identify as LGBTQ+ is especially important because they are more at risk for anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. When youth perceive their parents as affirming, the risk of mental health difficulties is significantly reduced.
While LGBTQ+ kids are more at risk than their gender-normative peers, rates of anxiety, depression and suicidality are soaring among youth in the US. This means that all of our children need Affirming Parenting right now because it is a powerful protective factor.
This workshop will equip parents, guardians and caregivers with the tools and insights needed to embrace and implement affirming parenting practices that benefit all children. Whether you are new to affirming parenting or seeking to deepen your existing practices, you will gain valuable insights and actionable strategies.
