Little Kids, Big Emotions: Help Young Children Thrive

The emotions center of your young child’s brain is developing faster than the thinking part of their brain. That is why they sometimes get swamped with emotions and have unreasonable meltdowns. Your young child needs your calm energy to help their overwhelmed brain calm down. You have probably already noticed that timeouts, threats and punishments really don’t help and actually often make things worse. So how do we help young children manage their emotions and their behavior? This series of classes will help you:

  • Recognize the importance of developing practices to calm your brain when your child is upset
  • Apply effective strategies to reduce and respond to tantrums and help your child manage their emotions
  • Create routines and apply positive discipline approaches that support cooperation in young children

Schools face academic loss challenges every year, and in response to COVID-19 we are seeing an even greater loss and a widening of the achievement gap. So how can we address the loss and build understanding? First, we can start with building empathy, and then as a community, we can embrace the academic challenge.

Led by Peace at Home Parenting experts Amy Alamar, Ed D, and Dana Asby, MA, M Ed, this series addresses the important issues faced by educators: How do we build community and approach academics after such a challenging time in education? What have students experienced, what do they need, and how can we begin to capture their attention and engage them in learning? We will introduce practical and effective ways to emphasize emotional safety and equity for in-person and hybrid environments.

This series supports the ability of educators to:

  • Recall strategies to build resilience
  • Foster community and nurture relationships
  • Recognize and address grief
  • Establish/Re-establish routine
  • Use mindfulness to teach self-regulation at home and at school

Parenting is a demanding job that takes lots of physical and emotional energy. If you are stressed or exhausted it is difficult to be the parent that you want to be – regardless of how much parenting education you seek! Well-being includes your emotional, social, mental and physical health. It depends on feeling like you can cope with daily stressors, having a sense of purpose and generally enjoying life. Parents with a strong sense of wellbeing can manage difficult emotions, make time for supportive relationships and for doing things they enjoy. The purpose of this library is to help you achieve wellbeing by reflecting on your own needs and considering how your personal history may be affecting your parent-child relationships. This series will help you:

  • Recognize symptoms of distress that you may be ignoring and would benefit from attention
  • Consider beliefs and ideas that may be getting in the way of wellbeing and positive parenting
  • Address specific challenges such as getting on the same page with your co-parent and handling stepparenting relationships

Routines are powerful tools. They bring you and your young child closer and reduce power struggles. Routines help little ones predict what comes next, trust that you will meet their needs, and feel more confident. Transitions between activities can be challenging and routines ease those difficulties and help children learn. Routines also decrease behavior corrections and increase cooperation in your child.

Parents who participate in “Routines that Work with Little Ones” Library will be able to:

  • Apply effective strategies to help your young child cooperate with daily activities like getting dressed or eating meals
  • Create routines that are enjoyable, include key child learning principles
  • Recognize the role parents play in carrying out routines that work
  • Address ‘hot spots’ that frustrate parents, like transitions between activities, and get in the way of parents attending to their responsibilities.
