Challenges & Solutions

Post-pandemic family life has been dramatically impacted by the perfect storm of working parent burnout in combination with our national pediatric mental health crisis. Children and teens are suffering from anxiety, depression and suicide at alarming rates, and parents are struggling to simply hang on.

Peace At Home founder Ruth E. Freeman, LCSW and Attachment Based Family Therapy founder, Guy S. Diamond, PhD share an in-depth conversation about why individual therapy for children and teens is often not enough to address mental health concerns. This is an opportunity to learn the many important ways you can make a difference in your child’s therapy and at home.

Sugar, Screens, and Routines: Find the Right Balance for Your Family

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Aaron Weintraub Aaron Weintraub,MS, Curriculum Advisor

Challenges & Solutions

When you just need time to get things done, extending kids’ screen time seems like an easy fix.  Maybe you just agree to another treat so your child will give you some peace. These small habits may result in less cooperation, calm, and even happiness in your family. These small habits, however, can become patterns that lead to more problems.  Let’s talk about some other approaches that work.

Daily schedules are busy and parents are coping with more and more demands. A recent report tells us that 66% of working parents are experiencing “parental burnout.” Sadly this is happening at the same time as a mental health crisis among our children and teens. Shortcuts like more screen time and sugar might be considered “parenting hacks.” And they work in the moment. However, in the long run, they often result in less cooperation, calm, and even happiness in your family. Sugar and screens are associated with pleasure. We adults use these solutions to get through the day as well. What’s the problem? We are learning that the biology of pleasure is actually in contrast to the biology of happiness. We do a lot of things that make us feel good in the moment but don’t lead to happiness or a sense of well-being. Kids look to us to help them know how to feel about the world. Are we passing on quick hits of pleasure habits that lead to happiness?

Is it Safe? Help Your Child “Come Out” and Protect Their Mental Health

Expert

Peace at Home Expert Lisa Day Lewis Lisa Day-Lewis (she/her/hers),LPC-A, MEd

Challenges & Solutions

Join us for a special and inclusive parenting workshop that celebrates National Coming Out Day.

Come together in a welcoming space with parents and caregivers like yourself. Gain the knowledge and skills needed to support your child to feel safe about exploring and expressing their identity. Discover ways to create an environment that fosters your child to come out when they are ready. Navigating coming out is unique to each individual. Using specific language, creating opportunities and space, and demonstrating allyship can all help your child know that when they do choose to come out, they can do so safely with you.

Coming out is not a one-time event. Many LGBTQ+ individuals who come out to their closest family and friends may later come out at school or work, to their extended family, or to casual acquaintances. For some, coming out is no longer a big deal – it can be a simple matter of correcting someone’s assumptions about themselves or introducing their partner. For others, coming out is still a huge challenge. The very real fear of facing discrimination, bullying, or judgement can cause LGBTQ+ kids to stay ‘in the closet,” struggling with anxiety and/or depression while they strive to be themselves. Hear examples of real coming out stories including what helps and what doesn’t.

If you believe that your child may identify or is exploring identity as LGBTQ+ this workshop may be a lifeline. LGBTQ+ youth are four times as likely to attempt suicide as their peers. It is not because they are inherently prone to this risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This increased risk is due to how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. One accepting adult can decrease your child’s risk by 40%. Even if your beliefs or faith position conflicts with your child’s LGBTQ+ identity, you can find ways to navigate your relationship so that it communicates love and acceptance on a daily basis. You’ll never agree on everything with your kids, but regularly communicating the depth of your connection is a powerful protective factor in a complicated world.

Challenges & Solutions

An effective work-life blend involves being intentional about how you align your priorities.  Blending doesn’t mean you’ll be able to do everything. It’s the practice of more creatively and flexibly integrating the two prominent areas of your life so you can do more or do what you’re doing with less stress. One of the keys to creating an effective blend is finding ways to share household tasks harmoniously. Sound like two impossible dreams? Join us for an enlightening conversation about what it means to find your unique work-life blend and discover a new, highly effective approach to solving the persistent challenge of gender equity in household tasks. You’ll gain “Fair Play” tools to create a more balanced and harmonious partnership with less tension over daily life and more room for fun and fulfillment.

If time allows, we will explore the ways these strategies can promote a supportive corporate culture that encourages equitable partnerships, work-life balance, and shared responsibility among employees

Please note: This workshop is open to all participants, regardless of your relationship status or gender identity. The content will focus primarily on addressing gender inequity with heterosexual partnerships. The content will also acknowledge and respect the diversity of relationships and family structures. Those in other kinds of relationships (including roommates, parents and adult children, colleagues, etc.) may benefit from learning how to better create a more explicitly defined and fair relationship.

Are you concerned that your teen may be at risk for an eating disorder? Does any of this sound like your child?

  • Preoccupied with weight, food, calories, and dieting
  • Disappearance of large amounts of food in a short amount of time
  • Skipping meals or uncomfortable eating around others
  • Frequently going to the bathroom immediately after meals

  • Refusal to eat certain foods or food groups
  • Irritable when something interferes with their ability to exercise

Your teen may be struggling with an eating disorder. And you may feel overwhelmed and uncertain about how to help them. You and your teen are not alone. 13% of adolescents will develop an eating disorder by the age of 20.

Challenges & Solutions

Bullying has emerged as a significant concern affecting children’s emotional well-being and development as it can contribute to children feeling anxious and depressed. Social networking technology has expanded the ways that bullying touches children’s lives. As a parent, it’s natural to feel a mixture of worry, confusion, and helplessness when your child faces bullying. However, there are proactive steps you can take to equip your child with the tools they need to navigate these difficult situations confidently.

Ideally, we can prepare children to recognize and deal with bullying in advance, even if they have never experienced it. Kids who have had conversations with their parents about bullying are more likely to come to their parents for support when they need it. This workshop will support you to empower your children with knowledge and tools to understand, identify, and effectively address bullying behavior.

Let’s work together to foster a generation of confident, resilient, and empowered individuals. We’ll discuss approaches to arming our children with the skills they need to face the challenges of life with courage and grace.

When students’ parents are involved in school, kids tend to have higher grades and test scores, better attendance and higher rates of completing their homework. Most agree that finding ways to fairly share responsibilities at home is very important to feeling satisfied for couples who are married or living together. However, in 2020, 55% of men said they are very satisfied with this aspect of their relationship, while only 38% of women see it the same way. So to honor Women’s Equality Day, let’s dig into these differing views and discover what really works for both partners. Everybody loses out when we don’t have equity and everybody needs to participate in recalibrating how we do things to reach equality. Join us for an enlightening conversation and discover a new, highly effective approach to solving the persistent challenge of gender equity in household tasks among heterosexual couples.

Generation Bonds: Nurturing Thriving Relationships Between Grandparents, Adult Children, and Grandkids

Peace at Home Parenting Expert Cora Megan Cora Megan,MA Peace at Home Parenting Founder and Expert Ruth Freeman Ruth Freeman,LCSW

Challenges & Solutions

Relationships with grandchildren are among the most cherished that adults experience. And yet, that relationship comes with rules and challenges. Almost half of parents report having conflicts with their children’s grandparents about discipline, food, screen time and bedtime among other issues. Some parents feel frustrated but don’t want to rock the boat or hurt their parents’ feelings.

Grandparents may hate being told what to do by their own kids or truly believe they know better. Some grandparents are accustomed to offering unsolicited advice which they may have done throughout their child’s lives, even though it isn’t really helpful. And finally some grandparents just hate stepping down from the position of being the wise one.

In some cases, parents are intentionally doing things differently from their parents. Neuroscience has taught us a lot more about child development and the impact of the parent-child relationship but grandparents are not always open to learning about these ideas. As we age, change can be hard, especially about deeply held cultural beliefs and values.

Listen to this conversation between two seasoned Peace At Home teachers: one is a grandparent and the other is a parent who deals daily with her children’s grandparents. Let’s untangle this age old challenge together on behalf of the kids!

Adjusting to a new school, new friends, new childcare, new family structure through divorce or other family changes can be both positive and daunting at the same time. Guiding children through these experiences while we are having feelings at the same time can be a challenge. It helps to keep in mind that processing change actually strengthens resilience. Trying to always protect your child from having to make changes really isn’t helpful.

So what does help? Kids who are new to change need a little extra support to recognize and address emotions as well as strategies to solve problems and feel at ease. Let’s talk together to gain an overview of the common stresses associated with major points of transition in family life like entering kindergarten, graduating from high school, even “boomerang” adult children returning home, and more. You’ll have a chance to understand your own reactions to change as well as those of your child so that you can gracefully and lovingly offer support during these exciting and sometimes challenging times.

You are not alone. The world of Special Education is important to our children, but can be quite mysterious to parents.

This class will help you understand the laws behind your child’s rights. You will learn about what to expect from two different kinds of services for children with disabilities: 504 Plans and Individual Education Programs (IEPs).The difference between the two is confusing to many parents. Are you curious about potty training but unsure if your child is ready? Have you thought about starting the process but unclear about where to begin? We can help. Potty training is an important milestone for children learning to take care of their bodies. Parenting books about toilet training emphasize the ways that toddlers show signs of readiness. However what books often don’t highlight is that parents need to be ready, too!  Another important step is having a cooperative parent-child relationship with your child before starting out. Join us to discuss the evidence based approach for potty training with Peace At Home expert JoAnn Robinson, PhD. Challenges & Solutions

Starting at 12 years old, your teen’s brain is in a process of intense physical, cognitive and social development. They are becoming more aware of themselves and forming identity – recognizing and deciding who they really are.  As their brain changes and struggles to adapt to their social environment, they may sometimes be moody, anxious and irritable. If you notice them becoming withdrawn, lacking energy, changing eating or sleeping habits, not enjoying things they used to, even fighting or getting into trouble with peers and adults, they might be experiencing depression.

Learning about the signs and symptoms of depression can help you to support healthy coping and growth. This session will give you some ideas about what support really looks like and how to avoid unhelpful approaches that are easy to fall into when you are worried about your child.

If you’re feeling like you don’t have the bandwidth to be the parent you really want to be, you are not alone.

One recent study reports that 66% of working parents are experiencing “parental burnout” which may include increased anxiety, depression, use of alcohol, increased punitive parenting and even feeling distant from their kids. At the same time we are seeing soaring rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm and other mental health problems in children and teens. The American Academy of Pediatrics has actually declared a “national crisis” in pediatric mental health. This post-pandemic perfect storm is impacting families across the country.

Challenges & Solutions

Let’s be real…many of us have had our kids “at work” enough over the past couple of years, but what about our “inner child?” Let’s bring them out to play.

So what is your “inner child?” One definition refers to your subconscious mind that was picking up messages before you were mentally and emotionally able to fully process what was happening around you. Your inner child holds emotions, memories and beliefs from the past, as well as hopes and dreams for the future.

Your inner child holds some gifts you may not be accessing. Children learn and thrive through play, so we will examine the ways that bringing that playful part of us to work can stimulate creativity, relaxation and positive relationships.

Join Peace At Home founder, Ruth E. Freeman, LCSW and much loved early childhood expert, Cora Megan, MA to think together about how your inner child is either showing up in ways that challenge you or maybe getting ignored in ways that limit your happiness and satisfaction with life.
